Summary

The Office of Rail and Road (ORR) is the independent safety and economic regulator for Britain’s railways and the independent monitor of Highways England. We are here to ensure the network operates safely, reliably and provides value for taxpayers and customers. This role is within the Railway Safety Directorate. The directorates core objectives are:

 

  • Protects the health and safety of everyone associated with the rail industry by ensuring railway businesses have mature health and safety management in place.
  • Seeks assurances across all the sectors we regulate by confirming that duty holders are controlling risk.
  • Look to identify where duty holders are not complying with the law, and take action in accordance with our enforcement policy statement to ensure the safety of workers, passengers and members of the public are protected.
  • Uses evidence from our activities help guide our strategy and priorities so that we can continue to ensure risks are effectively managed.

Job description

We have two roles to fill, in small teams who work closely with all of ORR’s various directorates. One is with the TfL team who cover Transport for London’s railway operators such as London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, Rail for London, and a wide range of train operating companies. The second is with the Network Rail Southern Region team who cover Network Rail and its contractors operating in the Kent, Sussex and Wessex.

 

We are looking for two enthusiastic, inquisitive, and highly motivated individuals to join us based in London as trainee inspectors, and use the opportunity to make a difference to health and safety on London’s railway.

 

As one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Railways you will regulate health and safety for: passengers; the workforce; and the public; who use, operate and maintain Britain’s railways. The team you will work with is responsible for ensuring railway duty holders meet the requirements of health and safety law and are working towards achieving zero industry caused fatalities.

 

We are looking for you to be an influencer, able to articulate your rationale and reasoning through skilled, persuasive communication based on your analytical expertise. You are a team player; decisive and focussed; a problem solver. You are disciplined, recognising the importance of following processes, standard, rules and guidelines.
