RAIL PROFESSIONAL COMMENT: Feet on seats: A threat to the railways?
Each year passengers are attacked by other passengers, in robberies or outbreaks of drunken violence, and some even lose their lives as a result. So it is to be welcomed that some train operators are taking anti-social behaviour seriously so that passengers, and staff, can feel safer both at stations and on trains.
However, Merseyrail found its 'zero tolerance' policy being widely questioned by the media and legal profession when it prosecuted 19-year-old cub scout leader Kathleen Jennings, not for a random act of violence, fare evasion or even damage to property, but for putting her feet on a seat, even though she took her feet off the seat and apologised when the guard approached...
